California Primary Election Results

The top two candidates in state-level primary elections advance to the general election in November. As soon as the Associated Press calls their races, checkmarks will appear next to their names. Shortly after the polls shut at 8 p.m., preliminary results are anticipated.

Every state voter registered to vote gets a ballot in the mail. If you want to vote by mail, these ballots must be mailed by March 5. Processing them can take a few days. It also takes longer for the california election results of conditional and provisional ballots to be added to the total once they are verified.

Presidential races

Super Tuesday is when 16 states and one US territory will hold their 2024 california primary elections results. California is one of those states. Although there are apparent front-runners for both major parties, nominations can only be ensured if a candidate receives the majority of pledged delegates.

On this busy california primary day, over one-third of the delegates up for president are given out. 1,421 Democratic delegates—424 of which are from California—and 874 Republican delegates—169 of whom are from California—are up for votes.

Congressional races

US Senate

This state has hosted its first US Senate race without an incumbent since 2016, and 27 candidates are competing for the seat. One must finish in the top two on March 5 to advance to the primary election. Still, Californians have the opportunity to cast ballots in two Senate races. Laphonza Butler was proposed by Governor Gavin Newsom in September to temporarily replace the late Senator Dianne Feinstein until a replacement could be selected. Whoever wins will be in office for two months, starting on November 5 and ending on January 3, 2025, the end of the term.

More importantly, the other Senate contest on the primary ballot will decide who will be California’s junior senator for the ensuing full six-year term, which runs from January 2025 to January 2031.

US House

California’s challenging congressional districts could change the GOP’s chances of winning the general election. Potential swing seats include District 22 in the San Joaquin Valley and Districts 40, 45, and 47 throughout the Southland.

House seats in three Los Angeles-area districts are held by Democratic lawmakers who are leaving office.

Statewide races

Proposition 1

The sole state legislative proposal up for a vote in March is Proposition 1.

To better help california primary with problems, the proposition urges voters to adopt significant revisions to the state’s 20-year-old Mental Health Services Act. If the proposal is approved, a $6.38 billion bond to fund the construction of buildings housing 10,000 more treatment beds would also be supported.
