Theatrical Legend Chita Rivera, Says Good by at 91

Legendary icon Chita Rivera, prominently known for her role as Anita in the superhit movie of the 1957 Broadway cast of “West Side Story,” has left the world at the age of 91. As per the official statement made by her daughter, she died on Tuesday in New York after a long illness. 

Chita Rivera was honored with 10 Tony nominations and won two times in her career. She also achieved a special tony award for a lifetime achievement in theater in 2018.

She won awards for “Kiss of the Spider Woman and “The Rink”. Despite her busy stage schedule, she appeared in various TV shows and movies, including screen adaptations of “Chicago”, “Sweet Charity” as well as “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.”

Her most recent movie, “Tick, Tick… Boom!” was launched on Netflix in 2021, in which she appeared as a special actress among other stage musical luminaries.

Chita Rivera was born Dolores Conchita Figueroa del Rivero in Washington, D.C., in 1933, and she has dedicated her entire life to the stage. As per the sources Chita Rivera age was 91 years at the time of her death. Though her father, a Puerto Rican clarinetist, passed away when she was just seven, it was her mother, a government clerk with a mixed Scottish, Irish, and African-American heritage, who nurtured her creative spark.

Her feet began trapping in a different rhythm only when she was four years old. Her journey caught speed when she was enrolled in the Jones-Haywood School of Ballet, as her natural talent stunned the instructors. 

Her life changed at the age of 15 when she met a mentor from George Balanchine’s School of American Ballet. She got a scholarship, which landed her in the hallowed halls of dance royalty. She nourished her skills there with rigorous training. She got her first ever professional gig in 1952, when she was 19 years old, for a touring production of “Call Me Madam.” This was just the beginning.

Chita Rivera, who was a legendary Broadway, passed away on 30 January 2024 due to a fatal illness. Her death is a black day for the theater industry of the world and a deep sense of loss for fans and fellow artists alike. However, instead of dwelling on the sadness, we have to celebrate the incredible legacy and life she left behind for us. Apart from being an outstanding performer, she was a mentor, inspiration and trailblazer. Her legacy was alive for several decades, during which she made unforgettable performances, earned numerous records, and, most importantly, broke barriers for Latinas in theater.
